Featuring EFC Specialty Coaches:
Coach JP Bordeleau
Coach JP Bordeleau doesn't think there is anything out there he can't do without the right preparation and the right attitude. That is the same attitude that he instills in his clients. Motivating someone to try something he or she never thought was possible is one driving force that inspires him. Whether it's running a 5K or completing a 24-hour adventure race, Coach JP gives his clients the physical and mental tools to accomplish the task.
He began his coaching career several years ago with the Chicago Tomahawks, a special needs hockey team. He continues to volunteer with the Tomahawks but has progressed through the ranks of coaching hockey and is currently the head coach at Loyola Academy for the Varsity Maroon squad. Becoming a Spin Instructor was next. While training for various Adventure Races, JP fell in love with Spinning Classes and became an instructor himself. He continues to teach Spinning out of the Evanston Athletic Club. Additionally, he has NASM Personal Trainer certification, USAT Level I and is currently studying for his USA Cycling Level III qualification.
His athletic career started at the age of 2 when his father, a former professional hockey player for the Chicago Blackhawks, had him on skates. Hockey and golf dominated his life for the next 24 years until a broken arm left him on the sidelines. JP did not slow down, and instead started running with a cast on his right arm and hasn't stopped since. The cast is long gone but not the desire to run and push the limits of his body. Since 2001, he has run 13 marathons (including 2 Ultras), finished several adventure races (including one that lasted 66 hours), along with completing multiple other running, cycling and triathlon races. JP ends the 2008 season with Wisconsin Ironman.
The motto that JP has lived by for the past several years is, if the mind is willing the body is able. That is what he wants his clients to believe after working with him. He looks forward to working with you and helping you reach the next level of your athletic career, whatever that may be.

Coach Darcy Wagner
Darcy Wagner is new to the EFC coaching staff in 2010. She has participated in a variety of sports during her athletic career, but finally discovered her love of triathlon at the end of her college years. Growing up, she participated in cross country, track, basketball and swimming. In high school, she was a three sport varsity athlete in cross country, basketball and track while at Notre Dame Academy in Toledo, Ohio, earning all-league honors in all three sports. While in college, she was a walk-on member of the Gonzaga University (Spokane, WA) crew team and earned an athletic scholarship after her first semester.
Coach Darcy currently serves as the varsity assistant coach for both cross country and swimming at Notre Dame Academy in Toledo where she has helped guide her athletes to top performances at the Ohio state competitions. For the past ten years, Darcy has taught swim lessons and coached youth swimming and diving at Laurel Hill Swim and Tennis Club. As both an athlete and as a coach, she has been a part of an impressive 17 consecutive league championships.
When she isn't coaching, Darcy is nearing completion of her doctorate work in biomedical engineering at the University of Toledo. Her graduate research focuses on using novel bioceramics for orthopedic pathologies (such as osteoporosis and fractures) using tissue engineering and gene therapy principles. With Coach Darcy’s immense youth coaching knowledge, personal training and racing experience and outgoing personality, she has much to offer the young triathlete!
Coach Darcy's Goals and Objectives: |
| |
As a Coach, Darcy stresses the importance of individualized, specialized training for her athletes. Delivering scientifically researched training methods and techniques to her athletes, she also places a heavy emphasis on the correlation between sports psychology and performance. Coach Darcy has vast experience in working with the youth athlete. Triathlon is one of the fastest growing sports in the world, but there is little emphasis placed on the young triathlete. Darcy's main goal with Energy Fitness Coaching is to bring its unique and exceptional coaching style down to the young triathlete in Energy Fit Kids! |

Coach Steve Block
When Steve jumped into Lake Michigan for his first Chicago Triathlon in 1984, it was the start of his participation in the sport that has spanned nearly 25 years. Like many in “the early days” of triathlon, Steve was a runner who was looking to diversify his training and expand his athletic endeavors. That was well over 100 triathlons ago and Steve is still competing in triathlons with a current focus on Ironman-distance events.
Steve brings a tremendous amount of broad triathlon experience and technical knowledge to EFC. He’s raced at most every triathlon distance and in most every weather condition. He’s seen the trends, training philosophies, nutrition programs and equipment that have shaped the sport and brought it from an oddity (well, some say it still is) to an Olympic event. Every race brings something new, however, and Steve is continually learning through participation in events, interaction with other coaches and camps/seminars. He’s also made nearly every possible mistake in the sport and is committed to keeping you from doing the same!
Throughout a demanding 23-year career as a management consultant for a global firm, Steve balanced his work and family commitments with athletic training and participation. It wasn’t easy and he learned a lot – in particular, that haphazard training leads to poor results. At the longer distances, haphazard training usually results in disappointment and often, injury. He understands that maintaining a work, family and training equilibrium is a challenge and he is committed to helping you develop and execute a plan to attain your goals.
Steve resides in Barrington, Illinois with his wife Mary Anne and two children, Stephanie (14) and Hannah (11).
| Goals and Objectives |
| |
• Bring the enjoyment and benefits of multisport participation to a new group of people • Help demystify triathlon for those new to the sport – it’s not that complicated! (And the swim really isn’t that bad, either) • Get a new generation involved in the sport • Assist others in avoiding the mistakes I’ve made over the years and have FUN in the sport

Coach Matthew Clark
Matt has been involved in the sport of Triathlon for the past 14 years with the last 7 years racing as a professional throughout North America, Europe, Asia and Australia. Coach Matt has taken his experience, knowledge and passion for the sport and brings it to his fellow athletes to help them achieve their chosen goals whether it may be toeing the line for their first triathlon or competing in the Ironman world championship in Kona, Hawaii.
Matt became involved in the sport of triathlon after a bet with a high school friend. As soon as he crossed the line he was hooked and triathlon has now been apart of his life for more than 14 years.
Coach Matt has been a New South Wales Institute and Australian Institute of Sport scholarship holder, he has represented Australia at World Championships and now is regarded as one of the best swimmers in the sport and a future Ironman winner. With years of training with National Head Coaches and World Ironman and Olympic Distance Champions, Coach Matt has formulated up to date and smart training programs for his athletes.
As an athlete, Coach Matt now focuses on both Ironman and 70.3 distance triathlons and aims to be a multiple Ironman champion by the time he finishes his professional career. But just as much as competing himself he enjoys watching his athletes' race and achieve life long goals.
Coach Matt is a certified Ironman and Olympic distance Triathlon coach and Personal Trainer and is currently studying a Bachelor of Human Movement Science to further his education. His experiences from a beginner, amateur and now professional help him relate to every athlete he comes across. Coach Travis Vanderloon
Although Travis was a competitive athlete throughout his high school and college careers, upon graduation he quickly found himself in a stale routine. As with most people, after college Travis found a corporate job where he got the distinct honor of sitting in a 6x10 cubicle all day crunching numbers. After a few years (a few extra pounds) he found himself wanting. Not only wanting a change, but wanting to reignite that passion he used to have towards life. Because of his swimming background he decided to join the local gym and get back in the water in hopes of feeling that zest for life again. However, swimming countless laps with no real purpose was taking its toll and Travis was looking to do something great, something most people only dream about. Then one day it hit him…Ironman Triathlon. While sitting in his cube Travis decided that racing in an Ironman Triathlon was the shot in the arm he so desperately needed.
Fully expecting that training for and racing in an Ironman would be a long and difficult journey Travis gathered up the necessary equipment and started on his journey, not realizing how much his life was about to change. Crossing the finish line of his first Ironman was truly an amazing feeling and it’s something he will never forget. Shortly after his Ironman journey had ended Travis realized that training and racing in triathlons isn’t just another thing to check off his list. It has become and will always remain a major part of his life.
Through the sport of triathlon Travis has ignited his passion for living life to its fullest. Travis firmly believes that anyone is capable of achieving athletic greatness. Greatness is not a title given only to the first person that crosses the finish line; greatness is also for the ‘regular guy’ that has a dream of not necessarily winning the race, but just getting to the finish line. Greatness is having a dream, and not being afraid to go after that dream even in the face of adversity.
Take some time, think about what it is you want to achieve in life and in sport. If you decide that you want to take that first step towards your own personal greatness then Travis will be there to help you along the way. He understands the delicate balance of family, work, and sport, and will help maximize your results while minimizing the impact on the other aspects of your life. Partnering with EFC will allow Travis to give back to a sport that has given him so much and he is looking forward to helping you achieve your dreams.

Coach Justin Mayer
Coach Justin has been involved in the sport of Triathlon for over ten years. Justin gained a great deal of experience in his first decade of triathlon, and can relate to people of all ability levels. Finishing at both the front and back of the pack has provided Justin with knowledge that cannot be learned from a book.
Justin played baseball throughout his youth, which led him to a successful baseball career on his high school varsity team and experience traveling to Australia to play for the prestigious Area Code baseball team. However, Justin's passion for endurance sports won him over. During college he dedicated himself fully to training for endurance events such as the marathon and Ironman. Justin is currently training for the 2007 Ironman Wisconsin where he hopes to qualify for the Hawaii Ironman.
Throughout his multisport career Justin has credited his success to the people around him who have given him both guidance and support. Through coaching Justin hopes to give back to others what he has learned both from his own experience and the experience of others. Justin believes anything is possible with determination and smart training. Furthermore, because of Justin's education in psychology and continuing study in the field of sports psychology he feels that he has many "weapons"; to help people achieve their goals.
